Wardrobe Department & Costume Designer for The Sad Cafe

The Sad Cafe Movie Poster
I really enjoyed heading up the wardrobe department and doing the costume design for this project. The Director, Bennie Woodell, and I had the same vision for this film from the moment we met. The Sad Cafe was inspired by Hong Kong Cinema and is my most stylized project to date. Researching the significance of colors in Chinese Culture was critical in accurately presenting the concepts and dynamics of this amazing movie.

Bennie really allowed me to let my creativity flow while developing the costumes, wardrobe and fashion styling for this award winning movie. I used my research and creativity to add cultural significance into the costumes I created.

Aries and his crew, our villains of the film, all wore something gold or yellow symbolizing their characters as the center of power. I took liberties in how these colors were used in both the wardrobe design and styling.

Dark Blue was used in some form for all the death scenes. Blue can be a symbol for immortality in Chinese culture but dark blue is reserved for somber circumstances such as a death or funeral. Weaving my creativity with traditional symbolism from Chinese Culture gave the film an authentic but modern style that stood out.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on The Sad Café. It was also quite an honor to be mentioned in reviews of the film. Movie critics rarely mention the costume designer in a movie review. It was quite an honor to be mentioned by Richard Propes, The Independent Critic, in his review of this film.

Praise for Scot Fontaine's Costume Design:

"Lisa Haley's art and production design and Scot Fontaine's stylish costuming weave themselves together to create a lasting impression long after the closing credits." - Richard Propes, The Independent Critic
